Terraria 1.4.5 new pets: every new companion and how to get it
Version 1.4.5 brought a wave of new town pets — two from the Palworld crossover, one from the Project Zomboid crossover, and a handful more from hotfix drops — and they are the part of the update most players actually want. Here is every one of them and the cheapest route to each.
The pets, and what each one costs
| Pet | Source | What it takes |
|---|---|---|
| Chester | Deerclops drops the Eye Bone, the Guide trades it | Kill a boss you were going to fight anyway |
| Digtoise | Palworld crossover set | Unlock the crossover, then farm the themed pool |
| Cattiva | Palworld crossover set | Same set as Digtoise |
| Spiffo | Project Zomboid crossover set | Unlock the crossover, then farm the themed pool |
| Dirt Block | Underground enemy drop | Clear Cavern and Underworld enemies |
| Junimo | Stardew Valley crossover set | Find the Stardrop key item, then farm |
Each pet has its own dedicated page with the full route: Chester, Digtoise and Cattiva, Spiffo, Dirt Block and Junimo.
What a pet actually does
Town pets are companions, not residents. Mechanically:
- They follow you between biomes and settle in your town.
- They do not need a house, so they never displace a resident.
- They count towards crowding in your NPCs' happiness calculations.
- Only one can accompany you at a time.
The efficient collection order
| Order | Pet | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Chester | Free, effectively — it comes with a boss fight you need anyway |
| 2 | Digtoise and Cattiva | Same crossover unlock, so one unlock gets two pets |
| 3 | Dirt Block | Common drop, and you are underground anyway |
| 4 | Spiffo | Needs the Project Zomboid crossover unlocked |
| 5 | Junimo | Needs the Stardrop key item first, which is the slowest |
Two crossover sets give you three pets, so unlocking both is the efficient route if you want a full collection.
Journey Mode changes everything here
Duplication is the answer to "I want all of them but only one at a time":
- Research each pet once
- Spawn whichever one you want this session
- Swap at any time
That turns a multi-week collection into a single session. The duplication guide covers the mechanics.
Is it worth it?
| If you… | Then |
|---|---|
| Optimise a build | Skip pets — the companion slot is worth more elsewhere |
| Enjoy cosmetics | Do it — this is exactly the content for you |
| Want your town to look like a lived-in place | Do it — one pet wandering around does a lot for that |
How pets actually interact with the crowding limit
Because pets count as neighbours, it is worth seeing the arithmetic once, because it is the single most common surprise in a tightly planned town.
The rule your NPCs use: no more than two other NPCs within 25 tiles earns the solitude bonus, and each additional body inside that radius applies a separate 5% penalty. Pets are counted as bodies.
| Residents within 25 tiles | Result |
|---|---|
| 2 residents | Solitude bonus, both at 95% |
| 3 residents | Solitude bonus still applies to each of them, because each only has two others nearby |
| 4 residents | Solitude bonus lost, but no penalty yet |
| 5 residents | Each extra one applies a separate 105% multiplier |
So a single pet added to a four-resident pod pushes that pod over the threshold and costs you 5% on everything it sells. In a two-resident pod, the same pet is free.
