How to get the Spiffo pet in Terraria

Terraria8 min readVerified on patch 1.4.5.8

Version 1.4.5 shipped two crossover collaborations — one with Dead Cells and one with Project Zomboid — and each brought its own pets, furniture and events. The Spiffo plush is one of the Project Zomboid set.

Here is how the crossover works and what it takes to get the pet.

Why crossovers are worth chasing

Two reasons, and only one of them is about the pet.

The pet itself is a cosmetic companion, in the same category as the Dirt Block pet: it follows you around, it has no stats, and it does not affect combat. If you like the look of it, that is a complete reason.

The set around it is the bigger draw. Crossover updates in Terraria tend to bring a themed furniture set, a handful of weapons or accessories, and in the case of the Project Zomboid collaboration, a crossover event. Those items are permanent, and they are the kind of thing players specifically search for by name.

How the crossover unlocks

Crossover content is gated behind the update, not behind a normal Terraria progression chain. The route is:

 1. Update to version 1.4.5 or later. On PC that means 1.4.5.8; console, mobile and Switch are on 1.4.5.8.1.
 2. Find the crossover trigger in the world. The collaboration content becomes available once you have met the update's unlock condition — it is not something you can buy from a shop on day one.
 3. Complete the crossover content. Once unlocked, the items enter the normal item pool: drops, crafting and chests.
Because the content arrives through the item pool rather than a vendor, the acquisition is genuinely random. If you want the Spiffo plush specifically, that means farming the enemies and events that carry crossover drops until it turns up. Plan for that rather than expecting a quest step.

What the Project Zomboid crossover added

CategoryWhat to expect
PetsThe Spiffo plush is the headline companion from the set
FurnitureA themed furniture set for your house
EventA crossover event with its own rules and rewards
Weapons / accessoriesA small themed set, if you want to complete the collection

The crossover also brings its own event, which is a genuinely different kind of content from ordinary drops — a timed, rules-based encounter rather than a grind. If you play for events rather than loot, that is the main draw.

The pet, specifically

The Spiffo plush is a town pet, which means:

Warning: If you are running a tight two-NPC pod for the solitude bonus, adding a pet can tip one of them over the crowding threshold. Check the numbers before you bring a second companion into town. The NPC housing guide has the exact multipliers.

If you want the whole set

Crossover items drop from the content that carries them, so the efficient route is to focus on one source rather than spreading your time. My advice:

 1. Do the crossover event first. Events give a better rate of themed loot than passive farming.
 2. Then farm the enemies that carry crossover drops during the event window if there is one.
 3. Buy the furniture from the Traveling Merchant if it appears there — the rotation is slow but the item is guaranteed once it shows.

The other 1.4.5 crossover

The Dead Cells collaboration is the second half of the update, and it is the larger one — it adds a themed weapons set, outfits and furniture. The Dead Cells crossover guide covers what is in it and how to unlock it.

Version note: crossovers require 1.4.5 or later. This guide is written against 1.4.5.8 on PC; console and mobile run 1.4.5.8.1 and Switch usually trails a week behind. Check the version in your main menu before asking why an item is missing — the version differences page explains what differs between builds.
How do I get the Spiffo pet in Terraria?
The Spiffo plush comes from the Project Zomboid crossover content. You unlock the crossover and then acquire the plush item through the crossover's own progression rather than by farming a normal Terraria enemy.
What is the Project Zomboid crossover in Terraria?
It is one of two crossover updates in version 1.4.5, alongside the Dead Cells collaboration. It adds crossover-themed items, including pets, furniture and a themed event.
Does the Spiffo pet count against my town crowding in Terraria?
Yes. Town pets are included in the neighbour count that NPCs use to calculate their happiness multipliers, so an extra pet can tip an NPC over the crowding limit.
Can I use a crossover pet in Terraria Journey Mode?
Yes, Journey Mode lets you research and duplicate items, including crossover items, once they have been unlocked in the world.
Is the Spiffo pet worth farming in Terraria?
It depends entirely on whether you want the crossover set. Crossover items have no mechanical advantage over their normal-game equivalents, so the value is aesthetic.
