How to get the Dirt Block pet in Terraria

Terraria8 min readVerified on patch 1.4.5.8

The Dirt Block pet is a small cosmetic companion that follows you around and occasionally perches on your head. It is not useful in any mechanical sense, and that is precisely why it is worth a spot in a town — pets do not need a house.

What it actually is

Town pets in Terraria are companions rather than residents. Once you have one, it follows you around the world, and it can end up sitting on your head while you mine. The Dirt Block pet is the plainest of them, which is exactly the appeal if you have a specific aesthetic in mind.

Two things worth knowing before you farm for it:

If you are optimising your town layout, remember the second point. The NPC housing guide covers the exact 25-tile crowding rules.

Where it drops

The Dirt Block pet is an enemy drop from underground, not a boss drop and not a craft.

That means there is no single target to farm. The route is simply: go underground, kill things, and collect the drop.

LocationWhat to expect
Underground CavernThe main source. Most common Cavern enemies drop it
UnderworldAlso drops from the enemies there
The rest of the UndergroundLess common, but still worth clearing while you are mining
Farm it while you mine ore. The drop rate per enemy is what it is, but you are going to be underground anyway, so the marginal cost of the pet is close to zero. Bring a weapon with area damage and clear a room at a time.

How to get it efficiently

 1. Craft a decent weapon first. A sword is fine, but anything with wide swing or area damage clears a room per swing.
 2. Go down on the first day and start clearing the Cavern. You want ore anyway.
 3. Kill in groups. A room of enemies is worth more than one enemy at a time.
 4. Check your inventory after each room. The pet drops as an item like any other, so you will see it.
 5. Be patient on the first pass. If it does not appear in one trip, it will in the next — the drop rate is not rare, it is just spread across many enemies.
Warning: Do not go to the Underworld before you have at least a full set of iron armour. The enemies there hit hard, and the pet is not worth a death. The Cavern alone is enough.

What to do once you have it

Nothing mechanically, which is the point. It will follow you, it will occasionally sit on your head, and it will move to a new house if you move one.

If you are the kind of player who cares about how a town looks, the pet is one of the cheapest cosmetic upgrades in the game — a short afternoon of grinding and it is done permanently.

Version note: this guide is written against 1.4.5.8 on PC. Console and mobile are on 1.4.5.8.1, and Switch usually trails a week behind. Check the version in your main menu before assuming a drop location changed — the version differences page covers what differs between builds.

If you would rather chase a pet with a real story behind it, the Chester pet has one: it comes from defeating Deerclops. That guide is here.

What is the Dirt Block pet in Terraria?
It is a town pet that follows you around and occasionally sits on your head. It is cosmetic rather than useful, which is exactly why it is worth a slot in a town full of functional NPCs — it costs you nothing except the space it stands in.
How do I get the Dirt Block pet in Terraria?
It drops from enemies in the Underground Cavern and the Underworld, so it is a question of grinding underground enemies rather than farming a specific boss. Bring a weapon that does area damage and it comes quickly.
Does the Dirt Block pet take up a house slot in Terraria?
No. Town pets live alongside residents and do not need their own house. They do, however, count towards the crowding limit when your NPCs are calculating their happiness multipliers.
Can I have multiple pets in Terraria?
No, only one town pet can be your companion at a time, so pick the one whose drop you have the least interest in farming.
Is the Dirt Block pet worth getting in Terraria?
Only if you enjoy cosmetics. It does not help with combat, mining or movement, and pets are locked to the companion slot rather than the accessory slots.
