How to get the Chester pet in Terraria

Terraria8 min readVerified on patch 1.4.5.8

Chester is the deer-like town pet with a story attached: you get it by beating Deerclops until it drops an Eye Bone, then handing that bone to the Guide. It is the best-value pet in Terraria, because the boss you need to kill is one you have to fight anyway.

The route, step by step

 1. Find the Guide. He is in your world from the start and moves into the first house you build. You need him for the last step.
 2. Kill Deerclops. It is a surface boss, and it is on your list regardless — it appears before any mechanical boss.
 3. Keep killing Deerclops until an Eye Bone drops. This is the only grind in the whole process.
 4. Talk to the Guide with the bone in your inventory. He consumes it and gives you the Chester pet.
 5. Chester follows you. Done.
The Eye Bone drop is the only randomness in the process. Everything else is deterministic. If you are chasing a specific pet, this is the cheapest one to chase by a wide margin — no material farm, no key item, no material tier.

Where Deerclops appears

Deerclops is a surface boss that spawns at night, anywhere on the surface, and it also shows up if you use a Suspicious Looking Eye before you have defeated the Eye of Cthulhu.

DetailNote
TimeNight, above ground
TriggerNatural spawn, or a Suspicious Looking Eye used early
DifficultyLow — it is the first real boss most players meet
Why you want itThe Eye Bone, which becomes the Chester pet
Warning: Do not waste a Suspicious Looking Eye on Deerclops by accident. The Eye of Cthulhu is the boss you actually want early, and the Eye Bone drop from Deerclops is a farm you can do any night — no item required. The boss order guide covers why the Eye comes first.

What Chester does

Chester is a town pet, which means:

That last point is the only thing to watch. If you keep your NPCs in small pods for the solitude bonus, adding Chester inside the 25-tile radius can tip one of them out of it. The exact multipliers are in the NPC housing guide.

Why Chester is the best pet to chase

PetWhat it takes
ChesterKill a boss you must kill anyway, until a bone drops
Spiffo plushUnlock a crossover and farm the themed loot pool
JunimoUnlock a crossover and find a key item
Dirt BlockGrind underground enemies for a drop

Chester is the only one where the hardest part is something the game was going to make you do anyway. If you are starting a pet collection, start here.

Version note: this guide is written against 1.4.5.8 on PC. Console and mobile are on 1.4.5.8.1, and Switch tends to trail the others by about a week. Check the version in your main menu before assuming something changed — the version differences page has the detail.
How do I get the Chester pet in Terraria?
Defeat Deerclops repeatedly until it drops the Eye Bone, then talk to the Guide with the bone in your inventory. The Guide turns the Eye Bone into the Chester pet.
Is Chester a boss in Terraria?
No. Chester is a town pet, and the Deerclops that drops the Eye Bone is only the first boss in the game — Deerclops is technically the Eye of Cthulhu's second form, and it appears before any mechanical boss.
Where does Deerclops spawn in Terraria?
Deerclops spawns at night on the surface, anywhere above ground, and it also appears when you use a Suspicious Looking Eye before the Eye of Cthulhu has been defeated.
Does Chester need a house in Terraria?
No. Town pets follow you and do not require housing, but they do count towards the crowding limit your NPCs use when calculating happiness multipliers.
Is Chester worth getting in Terraria?
It is one of the easiest pets to obtain in the game — no key item, no material farm, just a boss you have to fight anyway — which makes it the best value pet in the collection.
