Terraria guides

Last verified: patch 1.4.912 guidesUpdated weekly

Terraria rewards preparation far more than it rewards reflexes. Almost every wall you hit comes from three things: an accessory you needed two hours earlier, a boss you fought without a weapon upgrade, or a material you did not think to farm. These guides are built around removing all three.

Where to start

If you have just spawned and your world has no copper yet, do not rush to a boss. The first hour is worth spending on three things that pay off for the rest of the run: a Chest from any surface structure, a Work Bench, and enough wood for a Bonemeal or two once you unlock an NPC house.

Watch out: the Merchant sells random stock. If you need a specific item for an accessory, buy the Angler first — the Fish Hook she sells is the material for the Guidelpost, and getting it out of the rotation takes several restocks.

Accessory reference

Accessories are the real progression system in Terraria. A single accessory can double your movement speed, grant immunity to a debuff, or open a shortcut you did not know existed. We maintain a full table with material, station and farm cost for each one.

Pre-Hardmode boss order

There is no strictly correct order, but there is a wrong one. The order below is the route we use because it keeps your gear level ahead of the difficulty spike instead of behind it.

  1. Eye of Cthulhu — after 100 HP, before anything else. Its movement-ability (only moves when you look away) makes it the cheapest boss to learn on.
  2. King Slime — farm 20 Gel plus a Solid Surface. The Queen Slime is better for farming, but King Slime is available far earlier and drops the Solid Surface, which several accessories need.
  3. Eater of Worlds — only after you have a ranged weapon. Do not fight it with a sword; the segment damage punishes melee.
  4. Brain of Cthulhu — once you have a ranged weapon with at least 20 damage. The Confused Brain sells for good money, so this boss pays for your next tier.
  5. Skeletron — after the Mechanical Eye from the dungeon, which requires 240 gold. That gold is the real gate, not the boss.
Pro tip: keep a Magic Dagger in your inventory before the Eater of Worlds. You can use it to knock the worm into a loop while it is distracted, which turns a dangerous fight into a short one.

Common questions

Is this guide site up to date?
Every Terraria page here lists the patch it was last verified on. Current pages are stamped with patch 1.4.9.
Can I get all accessories without following a boss guide?
Yes. The accessory reference lists the material, the crafting station and the farm cost for each one, so you can plan a farming route before you start.
Do I need the Eye of Cthulhu before Hardmode?
Not strictly required, but the pre-Hardmode boss route listed here assumes it, because skipping it leaves you under-geared for the first Hardmode biome.
Is it worth buying a player's guide?
Only if it contains something you cannot look up in ten seconds. That is why our pages lead with the answer and then show the route — you should be able to skim the first paragraph and start playing.
