Terraria 1.4.5.8 vs 1.4.5.8.1: what actually differs by platform

Terraria10 min readVerified on patch 1.4.5.8

Terraria's build numbers differ by platform, and the difference confuses people constantly — including people who have read otherwise good guides and concluded the guide was wrong. Here is exactly which build has what, and why it matters for the advice you read.

The current builds

As of October 2026, every currently supported platform runs the 1.4.5 line:

PlatformVersionNotes
PC (Steam, GOG)1.4.5.8The lead platform. Fixes land here first
Xbox1.4.5.8.1Picked up on 17 September 2026
PlayStation1.4.5.8.1Picked up on 17 September 2026
Mobile (iOS, Android)1.4.5.8.1Picked up on 17 September 2026
Switch1.4.5.8.1Picked up on 22 September 2026 — about a week behind

The pattern is always the same: content and fixes are built on PC first, then ported to console and mobile, then submitted for platform certification. That pipeline is why console and mobile sat on an older build for roughly a month after 1.4.5.7 landed on PC, and why Switch arrived five days after the others.

Treat the platform you actually play on as its own build rather than assuming there is one global version number. If a guide says "patch 1.4.5.8" and you are on 1.4.5.8.1, the guide is not wrong — it is describing the same content.

What actually differs between 1.4.5.8 and 1.4.5.8.1

Short answer: essentially nothing that affects advice.

The two builds are the same content with the same balance. The .1 suffix is the console and mobile line catching up with fixes that had already shipped on PC.

What genuinely differs is timing, not content:

SituationWhat happens
A hotfix ships on PCPC players get it that day; console players wait for certification
A guide mentions a hotfix itemConsole players may not have the item yet
A drop rate was correctedPC reflects it first; console reflects it weeks later

That last one is the practical reason a guide can feel wrong on console. If a guide says "the drop rate is now 2%" and your console build still has the old value, the guide is describing a version you have not received yet.

Warning: Do not read a PC hotfix number as a console release date. They are separate events separated by certification, which historically takes weeks. If you are on console and a hotfix sounds important, check whether it has actually reached your build before changing your route around it.

How to check your own version

Check it once, and you will immediately know which column of the table above you are in.

The next version

VersionStatus
1.4.5.xCurrent on all platforms
1.4.6 "Pulling It All Together"Announced. Crossplay Phase One, described as in final testing and platform certification. No release date published

Phase One of 1.4.6 gives console players local network play and direct IP-and-port connections. A later phase, not part of 1.4.6 as described, adds a join-code system that works across different networks without router configuration.

Do not plan around a 1.4.6 date. Re-Logic's own State of the Game post did not publish one, so any date on a news site is an estimate. The crossplay guide covers what is confirmed and what is still speculation.

The practical checklist

 1. Check your version before following any build-specific advice.
 2. Treat 1.4.5.8 and 1.4.5.8.1 as the same content.
 3. If a hotfix matters to you and you are on console, confirm your build has it before changing your plan.
 4. Do not trust any published 1.4.6 date.
 5. Your world and progress are unaffected by any of the above.

For the platform differences that are not about version numbers — control schemes, load times and content gating — see console versus PC.

What is the current Terraria version in 2026?
Every currently supported platform runs the 1.4.5 line. PC (Steam and GOG) is on 1.4.5.8; Xbox, PlayStation, mobile and Switch are on 1.4.5.8.1. The build numbers differ because PC receives hotfixes first.
Is Terraria 1.4.5.8.1 better than 1.4.5.8?
They are the same content at effectively the same balance. The .1 suffix is the console and mobile line catching up with the fixes that had already shipped on PC. Console and mobile picked up 1.4.5.8.1 on 17 September 2026, and Switch followed on 22 September.
Why does my Terraria guide say the wrong version?
Because it was written for PC. The most common real difference is not content but availability: a hotfix that landed on PC in August may not exist on your console build until the platform certification catches up, which historically takes weeks.
Does the version affect my world and my progress?
No. Worlds, characters and progress carry over between hotfix versions. The patch number changes, not your save.
Is Terraria 1.4.6 released?
Not yet. Re-Logic has announced 1.4.6 as Crossplay Phase One, describing it as being in final testing and platform certification, but no release date has been published. Any date you see on a news site is an estimate.
