Terraria best accessories: a tier list that says when to stop farming
Terraria accessories fall into three clear bands, and most players waste weeks farming in the wrong one. The tier list below is organised by when the accessory becomes available, not by raw power, because an accessory you can get in the first ten minutes is worth more than one that takes twenty hours.
The single most useful thing on this page is the stop line in each section: the point where the next tier is not worth chasing yet.
Pre-Hardmode: the five slots that decide your first hour
You have five accessory slots in Classic Mode. Filling them well is the difference between a smooth first boss run and a corpse run.
| Accessory | What it does | Where it comes from | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shiny Red Balloon | Carry a second balloon | Traveling Merchant | 100 Silver |
| Hermes Boots | Double jump and faster run | Crafted from a Hermes Shell and a Chain | One Shell plus one Chain |
| Band of Regeneration | Regenerate health over time | Traveling Merchant | A few hundred Silver |
| Shiny Stone | Slightly increases all stats | Surface chests, Dungeon | Low |
| Cloud in a Bottle | Double jump | Found in chests, surface to underground | Low |
| Obsidian Skeleton | +1 defense, +2% melee damage | Cavern | Low |
Two notes that matter more than the list itself.
Movement before damage. Hermes Boots and a Cloud in a Bottle are the two accessories that keep you alive in the first hour, because they change what you can reach, not what you can kill. A player who can double jump does not take the fall damage that a player who cannot.
Do not chase a second accessory from the Traveling Merchant on the same day. The stock rotates, and the useful item is often three restocks away. Buy the cheapest genuinely useful thing on the list and come back tomorrow.
Hardmode: where the build actually comes together
Once the Wall of Flesh is down you have three more sources of power: the four Celestial Shells, the class emblems, and the Ankh Shield. This is the band where the accessory reference table earns its keep, because there are now dozens of options and only a handful are worth a slot.
| Accessory | Slot it earns | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Ankh Shield | 1 slot | Blocks projectiles, immunity to knockback, and 12 common debuffs. Does not block stronger variants like Cursed Inferno or Frozen. |
| Celestial Shell | 1 slot | Small always-on bonuses plus large werewolf-form buffs at night and merfolk-form buffs underwater |
| Avenger / Destroyer Emblem | 1 slot | Stacked damage and crit for a whole class |
| Shiny Red Balloon | 1 slot | Carry a second balloon |
| Horse Magnet | 1 slot | Mounts work while you are airborne |
Post-Plantera: the endgame frame
Endgame slots are about damage multipliers and one or two survival pieces. The four Celestial armors each carry a passive that makes the class build itself.
| Accessory | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Celestial Shell | The only accessory that helps every class and every phase of the day |
| Ankh Shield | Still the best answer to projectile-heavy bosses |
| Champion's Helmet | Straight damage for most weapon builds |
| Hercules / Calculator / etc. | Set-specific damage pieces, one per class |
Stop line for endgame: once you have a Celestial Shell, an Ankh Shield and two class pieces with the right modifiers, further accessories are a rounding error. Move on to weapons and armour. The accessory grind has a natural end point, and most players overshoot it by a factor of three.
The five modifiers, and the one decision that matters
Reforging at the Goblin Tinkerer rerolls an accessory's modifier. There are five, and they are not equally useful.
| Modifier | Effect | Take it when |
|---|---|---|
| Menacing | +4% damage | You can survive the fight comfortably |
| Warding | +4 defense | You are still learning, or running a defense build |
| Lucky | +4% critical strike chance | Your damage is high but your crit rate is low |
| Quick | +4% movement speed | Almost never worth a slot |
| Arcane | +20 max mana | Only on caster builds with mana problems |
With five to seven slots, an all-Menacing set swings damage by up to 28% and an all-Warding set swings defense by the same amount. That is the entire decision. Most players should run all-Warding while learning, then switch to all-Menacing once the fight is comfortable.
The full cost and timing is in the reforging guide.
The stop-line summary
| Stage | Slots you actually need | Stop farming when |
|---|---|---|
| Pre-Hardmode | 3–4 useful, mostly movement | You have Hermes Boots and one offensive slot |
| Hardmode | 5–6, including Ankh Shield and a Celestial Shell | Both are in place |
| Post-Plantera | 6–7, mostly damage | Two class pieces at the right modifier |
| Endgame | Full set, optimised modifiers | Modifiers are correct — stop here |
What to farm next if you are not done
The accessory reference table lists every accessory with its material, crafting station and farm cost, so you can pick a single route and knock out several in one trip rather than farming one item at a time.
