Terraria Solar armour recipe: exact fragment counts for every piece
Solar armour is the melee class's endgame set, and its recipe is a gathering problem with one soft condition attached. Here are the exact material counts, where they come from, and the part of the set that is easy to misunderstand.
The ingredients
| Material | Source |
|---|---|
| Solar Fragments | The Solar Pillar boss, after the Moon Lord |
| Lunar Ingots | The Moon Lord |
| Crafting station | A Mythril or Adamant Anvil |
That is the whole list. No other materials, no boss beyond the two.
The exact fragment counts
| Piece | Solar Fragments | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Solar Helmet | 14 | The cheapest piece to finish |
| Solar Chestplate | 24 | The expensive one |
| Solar Leggings | 18 | In between |
| Total | 56 Solar Fragments | Plus Lunar Ingots for all three |
The numbers above are the 1.4.5 baseline. Drop rates change between patches, so verify against your own build before committing to a grind — the version differences page explains which build you are on.
Where the Solar Pillar is
The four celestial pillars appear in the world after the Moon Lord is defeated, each in its own biome. The Solar Pillar is the one in the Snow biome, which is why the Snow biome matters in the late game in a way it does not earlier.
- Beat the Moon Lord.
- Find the Snow biome and locate the Solar Pillar.
- Fight the pillar's boss with a good weapon and a buff or two.
- Collect the Solar Fragments. They come from the pillar boss.
The condition nobody mentions
Solar armour is the strongest melee set in the game only if you have been hit recently. The set's bonus scales with how recently you took damage, which means:
- You are strongest when the fight is going badly — which is the opposite of how armour usually works
- Playing defensively and never taking a hit means you get almost none of the bonus
- The set is designed to reward aggressive play, and to punish a player who plays carefully
This is the single most common thing players get wrong about Solar armour. They equip it, play carefully, see no benefit, and assume the set is weak.
How it plays
| Piece | What it does |
|---|---|
| Solar Helmet | Grants a melee damage bonus that scales with recent damage taken |
| Solar Chestplate | The core of the set's effect |
| Solar Leggings | Continues the set's damage scaling |
Combined, the set rewards you for staying in the fight. If you prefer a defensive playstyle, the Stardust or Nebula set is a better fit for melee, and the Molten or Shadow set suits a tankier approach.
If you want the weapon to match
Solar armour and the Zenith are the melee class's two signature late-game pieces, and they are obtained in the same stretch of the game — after the Moon Lord and during the pillar window. The Zenith guide has the crafting tree.
