Terraria 1.4.5 new boulders: the five new boulder types and what they do
Version 1.4.5 was nicknamed "Bigger & Boulder", and the boulder half of that name refers to five new boulder types added alongside more than 650 other new items. Here is what they are, where they appear, and whether they are worth a farming session.
What a boulder is
Boulders are large breakable scenery objects that spawn naturally in the world. When you break one, it can drop materials or items. They are a passive form of farming — you are usually doing something else and the boulder happens to be in the way, and occasionally it pays out.
That is the honest framing: boulders are opportunistic income, not a dedicated activity. The new types in 1.4.5 are interesting because some of them drop content that is otherwise awkward to get.
The five new boulder types
The update added five new boulder types to the existing set. They are biome-tied, which means each one requires a trip rather than being found everywhere.
| Approach | What to look for |
|---|---|
| Surface boulders | Common in the surface biomes, easy to find on any walk |
| Underground boulders | Cavern and Underworld, mixed in with normal mining routes |
| Biome-specific new types | Tied to the biomes added or reworked in 1.4.5 |
Boulders and the 1.4.5.7 hotfix
Worth knowing if you are chasing a specific new item: many of the newest boulder drops arrived with the 1.4.5.7 hotfix rather than with the base 1.4.5 update. That hotfix was unusually large, and coverage described it as a "massive item dump".
The practical consequence for boulders specifically is that the newest types can be missing from wiki documentation for months. If you are following a guide that says a boulder drops something and it does not, check your build first — the hotfix content reached PC in late August 2026 and console players caught up later.
| Platform | When the 1.4.5.7 hotfix arrived |
|---|---|
| PC | 19 August 2026 |
| Xbox, PlayStation, mobile | September 2026, via 1.4.5.8.1 |
| Switch | Late September 2026 |
How to farm them
- Find the biome first. The new types do not appear everywhere, and guessing wastes time.
- Bring a pickaxe or sword. Most boulders need a decent pickaxe — a Copper Pickaxe will barely scratch them.
- Clear a whole area rather than single boulders. Breaking several in a row is faster than walking between them.
- Collect as you go. The drops come from the boulder itself, so they appear where you are standing.
Are they worth it?
| Reason to farm | Verdict |
|---|---|
| You need a specific material for a craft | Yes — go to the right biome |
| You are collecting every new item | Yes, and use Journey Mode duplication for the painful ones |
| You want to finish the game faster | No — bosses and accessories give more per hour |
| You are just exploring | Fine, break them as you go |
The bigger 1.4.5 picture
The boulders are one small part of an update that added more than 650 items, nearly 900 bug fixes, nine new whips, four transformation mounts, fifteen new furniture sets, two crossover collaborations and a rebuilt world creation menu. If you are trying to see the update as a whole rather than item by item, the 1.4.5 new items guide is the overview, and the new summons guide covers the class changes that affect your build most.
A note on version
The 1.4.5 content arrived on every platform on 27 January 2026. This guide is written against 1.4.5.8 on PC; console, mobile and Switch run 1.4.5.8.1, and Switch typically trails by about a week. See the version differences page.
