How to get the Goat Skull mount in Terraria

Terraria8 min readVerified on patch 1.4.5.8

The Goat Skull is a mount that grants a double jump, which makes it more useful than it looks on paper. It drops from the death goats in the Underworld, so it comes from an area you will visit anyway during Hardmode progression.

The double jump is the point. A mount with a single jump can clear a gap of one jump height; the Goat Skull clears a gap roughly twice that, and the extra air time is what makes it a comfortable exploration mount rather than a gimmick.

It is a second mount, not a replacement. Most players end up using the Celestial Horse for raw speed and the Goat Skull for vertical gaps. Keeping both in a stable means you can swap with a hotkey.

Where to farm it

Death goats spawn in the Underworld, which you unlock by defeating the Wall of Flesh and dropping a hellstone into the lava.

The route that works:

 1. Build a hellstone bridge or platform down into the Underworld. You need a way back out, and a bridge is faster than grappling up.
 2. Bring a ranged weapon. Death goats reflect projectiles, so a bow is a poor choice; a sword or a magic weapon is better.
 3. Clear a section of the lava. Kill everything in an area, then let the drops settle, then collect.
 4. Repeat. The drop is not rare, so a focused session gets you there.
Warning: Do not go to the Underworld in iron armour. You will be killed by lava and by the enemies at once. Wait until you have a good weapon and at least a full set of hardmode armour. The Underworld is where the drop is, but it is also where runs end.

The Slimy Saddle is worth knowing about even if you skip the Goat Skull: it is found early, in the Cavern, and it turns any mount slot into a mount slot. Many players set it once and never touch it again.

Is it worth the trip?

Honestly, for most players the answer is "you will get it anyway". The drop is common enough that a single Underworld visit during Hardmode progression will turn it up. The double jump is a genuine quality-of-life improvement, but it is not a build-defining item.

If you are specifically optimising travel, the two things worth more are:

How do I get the Goat Skull mount in Terraria?
It is an enemy drop from the Underworld, where the death goats spawn. Killing enough of them and collecting the drop gets you the mount, which you can then equip like any other mount.
What does the Goat Skull mount do in Terraria?
It is a mount with a double jump, which makes it one of the better exploration mounts. The extra height changes how you clear gaps and how fast you can cross open terrain.
Is the Goat Skull mount better than the Celestial Horse in Terraria?
For raw exploration speed the Celestial Horse is still faster, but the Goat Skull's double jump means it solves vertical gaps that a single-jump mount cannot, which is why many players keep both.
Can I use the Goat Skull mount in Terraria Journey Mode?
Yes. Journey Mode lets you research and duplicate items you have found, and mounts are duplicated the same way.
Is the Goat Skull mount worth getting in Terraria?
Only if you already have the basic mounts. It is a comfortable second mount rather than an upgrade, and the drop is common enough that you will pick it up by accident.
