How to get the Soaring Insignia in Terraria

Terraria9 min readVerified on patch 1.4.5.8

The Soaring Insignia is a wing that grants permanent flight, and it is the biggest exploration upgrade in Terraria. Once you have it, every ground mount in the game becomes a curiosity — you can cross any gap, in any direction, without touching the ground.

What it does

PropertyDetail
TypeWing accessory
EffectPermanent flight while equipped in a wing slot
SourceThe Fairy Queen, in the Hardmode underground jungle
Trade-offIt occupies your wing slot

The flight is not a temporary burst like an arrow or a grappling hook. It is a permanent state, and it does not run out. That is the difference between it and every other mobility item in the game.

Why it makes ground mounts obsolete. A mount is faster than walking but only on flat ground, and it stops at every cliff, hole and wall. Flight has none of those constraints. Once the Insignia is in your inventory, the mount slot becomes a fashion choice.

Where to get it

The Fairy Queen lives in the Hardmode underground jungle, and the Insignia comes from her.

StepDetail
1Get into the Hardmode underground jungle — the one with the new, brighter jungle tiles
2Find the Fairy Queen and defeat her
3The Soaring Insignia drops from her

She is a fairy boss in the same family as the Queen Bee and the Plantera: a flying boss with a summoning mechanic. Defeat her during the Fairy Queen event, which can be triggered with a Life Crystal in the jungle after Plantera.

Bring a weapon with a long range and a fast rate of fire. The fight is a chase across the open jungle floor, and the damage comes from staying away from her rather than from being tanky.

The part that annoys people

The Fairy Queen fight is not hard, but it is chaotic, and the chaos comes from the Pixie Pirates she summons. Those enemies fly in and steal items straight out of your inventory — including weapons and accessories you are relying on.

Two mitigations:

Warning: Losing your weapon mid-fight to a Pixie Pirate is the single most common way people lose a Fairy Queen run. Do not bring a single valuable item and no spares. Keep a backup weapon in your inventory at all times.

What to do once you have it

Equip it in a wing slot and test it immediately, because it changes the shape of the game in ways that are easy to underestimate:

If you pair it with the Celestial Shell, you get a genuinely strong endgame accessory set: permanent flight plus the werewolf and merfolk forms. That combination is the standard late-game setup, and it is why the best accessories guide tells you to stop accessory farming once you have a Celestial Shell.

Is it worth it?

Yes, without much qualification. It is the one accessory where the "should I bother" question has an easy answer, because it does not compete with your damage slots — it lives in the wing slot, and the wing slot is usually empty anyway.

Version note: this guide is written against 1.4.5.8 on PC. Console and mobile run 1.4.5.8.1, and Switch typically trails a week behind. Check your build before assuming something changed — the version differences page has the detail.
How do I get the Soaring Insignia in Terraria?
It is an enemy drop from the Fairy Queen in the Hardmode underground jungle. Defeating the Fairy Queen and farming the event's enemies is the route — the Insignia itself comes from the Fairy Queen.
What does the Soaring Insignia do in Terraria?
It grants permanent flight, letting you fly with a wing slot equipped. Once you have it, ground mounts stop being useful for exploration because you can cross anything, in any direction, without touching the ground.
Does the Soaring Insignia take up a wing slot in Terraria?
Yes, it is a wing, so it occupies the wing slot. That is the trade-off — you give up the wing slot for permanent flight rather than buying a separate flight source.
Is the Fairy Queen hard in Terraria?
Not for the number you have at that point, but the fight is chaotic because it summons Pixie Pirates that steal your items. The fight is more annoying than dangerous, and the drops are what you are actually there for.
Is the Soaring Insignia worth getting in Terraria?
Yes. It is the single biggest quality-of-life upgrade for exploration in the game, and it removes the need for any ground mount.
