How to get the Terraprisma in Terraria
The Terraprisma is an astral summon weapon: it calls the Blade of the Empress to fight alongside you while you use a completely separate weapon. It is one of the most distinctive pieces of gear in the game, and it came into Terraria alongside the other astral weapons in the Journey's End era.
What makes it different
Most summon weapons in Terraria work like this: you hold a whip, it summons minions, and the minions do the damage while you keep your distance. The Terraprisma inverts that. It is a weapon you swing, and it summons a spectral blade that fights independently of your attacks.
That design makes it unusual in two ways:
- You can run a build with no minions at all. The Terraprisma does its own damage. Your summoner stat is not required for it to function.
- You pair it with a fast-firing weapon. Because the blade attacks on its own, your own weapon is free to be something that fires constantly.
| Property | Detail |
|---|---|
| Type | Astral summon weapon |
| Source | Lunar Obelisk, after the Moon Lord |
| Summons | The Blade of the Empress |
| Damage scaling | Scales with astral power collected |
Where to get it
Astral weapons come from the Lunar Obelisks at the base of the four celestial pillars, and they require Astral Power — the three-power system that unlocks after the Moon Lord.
The route:
- Beat the Moon Lord. The pillars only become attackable after the Moon Lord is defeated.
- Defeat all four pillars — Solar, Voidal, Stardust and Nebula. Each one drops fragments.
- Collect astral fragments from the bosses you beat while the pillars are active. This is where the power comes from.
- Fight the boss that drops the Terraprisma, which is tied to the Lunar Obelisk of that pillar.
The three-power system
This is the part that confuses people, and it applies to every astral weapon rather than just this one.
| Power | What it does |
|---|---|
| Solar, Voidal, Stardust, Nebula | The four elemental powers, one per pillar. Collecting them unlocks the astral weapon's strength |
| Astral Power | A separate, unified resource that boosts the astral weapon's damage |
| Radiant Power | The second resource, tied to a different set of bonuses |
The practical rule is simple: every boss you kill while the pillars are down contributes. The more of the game you clear during that window, the stronger the weapon. That means the optimal play is to clear content with the pillars active rather than rushing to the Moon Lord and then farming one boss.
How it plays
The Terraprisma is at its best with a weapon that fires fast, because the blade handles the damage and your own weapon just needs to keep up with the damage race. That is the opposite of a typical summoner setup, where your weapon barely matters.
In practice, the Terraprisma is a good fit for:
- A build with high melee speed but no minion capacity
- A character who wants a summon weapon without investing in the summoner stat
- A weapon-swapping setup where one slot is a fast ranged weapon and the other is the Terraprisma
Where it sits against other summon options
| Weapon | Notes |
|---|---|
| Terraprisma | Independent attacks, scales with astral power, needs no minions |
| Stardust Dragon Staff | The classic summoner workhorse, scales with minion count and the Stardust Dragon |
| Kaleidoscope | The other new stardust whip from 1.4.5, described in the new summons guide |
| Spinal Tap | Whip that fires itself, cheap and effective |
Version note
This guide is written against 1.4.5.8 on PC. Console and mobile run 1.4.5.8.1, and Switch usually trails a week behind. Check the version in your main menu before assuming a drop location changed — the version differences page covers what differs between builds.
