Terraria Hardmode boss guide: every boss after the Wall of Flesh

Terraria15 min readVerified on patch 1.4.5.8

Hardmode is where Terraria stops being a mining game and becomes a boss rush. The world changes permanently the moment you beat the Wall of Flesh, and from there every fight has a summon condition you can check in under a minute. This guide covers every boss from the Wall of Flesh to the Moon Lord, including the optional ones most guides skip.

The three mechanical bosses

All three must be defeated to trigger Plantera. Order between them barely matters.

BossWhereSummon conditionKey drop
DestroyerAnywhere at nightDestroy the probe at the bottom of the dungeon after the Wall of FleshMechanical Souls
TwinsAnywhere at nightDestroy the two Retinazers in the dungeonMechanical Souls
Skeletron PrimeAnywhere at nightDestroy the Skeletron Head in the dungeonMechanical Souls
All three are night-only and triggered by destroying a dungeon piece. Check the dungeon first thing every night — the spawn is random, and walking past the wrong one means waiting a day.

How to beat each one

Destroyer — a long worm with three segments that fire lasers. The mouth is the only vulnerable part, and melee players spend the whole fight chasing the wrong end. A ranged weapon with a decent rate of fire turns this into the easiest of the three.

Twins — two separate bosses, Spazmatism and Retinazer, each with its own health bar. They do not need to be killed in any order, but killing Retinazer first is safer because Spazmatism's fire is more dangerous than Retinazer's lasers.

Skeletron Prime — the hardest of the three. Two homing purple lasers plus a saw that fires in four directions at once. A long-range weapon with a fast rate of fire is more valuable here than raw damage, because you need to stay moving.

Warning: The Destroyer, Twins and Skeletron Prime all spawn inside the dungeon entrance if you are standing there when they spawn, and the dungeon guardian can appear at the same time. If you are dungeon-crawling when you hear the roar, leave immediately rather than trying to fight where you are.

Plantera

Where: the underground jungle. Condition: break the three large pink bulbs.

She is the first boss with a real mechanic rather than raw numbers — her hooks pull you in and her tentacle spines fire at angles. A ranged weapon that fires fast handles her well; a melee weapon struggles because you are constantly being dragged.

What she gates: Hardmode ores (ores only spawn after Plantera), the Golem, and the Empress of Light.

Golem

Where: the Temple in the jungle. Condition: break the two plants at the Temple entrance.

The hardest pre-Moon Lord fight by a wide margin. Three phases, and each one changes the fight completely — the head detaches and slams, then the fists attack from both sides.

What it drops: the Golem Fist, one of the strongest pre-Moon Lord weapons, plus the Tectonic Block and Solar Tablet.

The Golem is not required to beat the Moon Lord. It is required for the Golem Head trophy and the Solar Tablet, and it is the hardest content in the game before the Moon Lord itself. Players who want an easier route to the final boss can skip it.

Duke Fishron

Where: the Ocean, at night, near a Written Water pillar column.

Fishron is genuinely harder than the Golem, and it is optional. The fight is a DPS check with very little room to reposition — the water narrows your movement, and the Duke's lasers cross the arena.

What it drops: the Fishron Wing and the Fishron Hook, plus the Truffle Worm which is needed for the Mushroom Guy's house.

The Empress of Light

Where: the Hardmode Hallow, after Plantera. Condition: kill the Hallow boss enemies, then the Empress appears.

She is the hardest optional fight in the game — no weak points, fast dashes, and a damage threshold that punishes anyone without full armour. She is also the only source of Hallowed and Imp gear, which is why serious players do her anyway.

The Moon Lord

Condition: defeat Golem, Duke Fishron and the Empress of Light, then use a Celestial Sigil at night after the four pillars have been defeated. All three are required even though the Empress of Light is optional everywhere else.

Three phases, and the fight is long rather than hard — a DPS check with occasional damage windows.

What it drops: the two Celestial Shells, the Celestial Fragments, and the Spooky Helmet and other trophy items.

Warning: All version numbers here are for 1.4.5.8 on PC. Console and mobile run 1.4.5.8.1, and Switch tends to trail a week behind the others. If a summon condition does not fire, check your version first — the version differences page explains what changed between builds.

For the pre-Hardmode sequence, including the one mistake that ends more runs than any boss, see the boss order guide.

Do I need to beat the Wall of Flesh to enter Hardmode in Terraria?
No, you can skip it and fight the three mechanical bosses directly. Skipping it means entering Hardmode with a fraction of the resources, and it is a common way to lose a run. If you are unsure, the Wall of Flesh is the safer route.
Which Hardmode boss is the hardest in Terraria?
Skeletron Prime is the hardest of the three mechanical bosses because of its homing lasers, and Duke Fishron is genuinely harder than the Golem despite being optional. The Destroyer is hardest if you play melee, and easy if you play ranged.
How do I summon Plantera in Terraria?
Break the three large pink bulbs in the underground jungle. Plantera then appears, and the world becomes permanently corrupted around the jungle.
Is the Empress of Light required in Terraria?
No, she is entirely optional. She is the only source of Hallowed and Imp gear, and she is fought in the Hardmode Hallow after Plantera.
What do I need to beat the Moon Lord in Terraria?
Defeat Golem, Duke Fishron and the Empress of Light, then use a Celestial Sigil at night after the pillars have been defeated. All three are required even though the Empress of Light is optional content in the rest of the game.
