How to get the Kaleidoscope in Terraria
What it is
Whips are the signature weapon of the summoner class. Unlike a sword or a bow, a whip deals its damage through a sweeping hitbox that hits everything in an arc, and it summons minions that fight alongside you.
| Property | Detail |
|---|---|
| Type | Whip |
| Class | Summoner |
| Element | Stardust |
| Source | The Stardust pillar, after the Moon Lord |
| Requirement | Summoner stat, like every whip |
Where to get it
The Kaleidoscope comes from the Stardust pillar in the lunar biome set, which only becomes attackable after the Moon Lord is defeated.
- Beat the Moon Lord.
- Find the Stardust pillar among the four.
- Defeat the pillar's boss while the pillar is down.
- The Kaleidoscope drops from that fight.
There is no crafting involved and no key item. It is a boss drop, which means it is also part of the astral power system — every boss you kill while the pillars are active contributes to the power that boosts astral weapons.
How it fits with the other stardust options
The Stardust pillar gives you a family of related gear, and the class has two very different playstyles inside it.
| Weapon | Type | How it plays |
|---|---|---|
| Stardust Dragon Staff | Staff | Summons one dragon whose damage scales hard with summoner stat and equipment. Simple, extremely strong |
| Kaleidoscope | Whip | Sweeping hitbox plus regular minions. More forgiving, more mobile, less damage concentration |
The Dragon Staff is the higher ceiling. The Kaleidoscope is the better weapon when you want to keep moving — a whip hits while you are running, and a staff wants you planted while you watch a dragon.
When to use a whip instead of a staff
The summoner class contains two playstyles, and the Kaleidoscope belongs to the one people underrate.
A staff wants you planted. You stand at a distance, watch a dragon or a golem do the work, and reposition occasionally. It is a very safe playstyle with a very high ceiling.
A whip wants you moving. The sweep hits everything in an arc as you run, so you are never stationary. That is worth something beyond raw numbers: in a fight you cannot dodge, a whip keeps hitting while you retreat, and the minions keep hitting too.
| Situation | Better choice |
|---|---|
| A boss with big telegraphed hits | Staff — stand back and let the minion tank |
| A fight you cannot out-damage | Whip — the sweep hits constantly |
| A boss with narrow beams and safe zones | Whip — you are already moving |
| A long fight where you want maximum safety | Staff |
| An endgame boss where you have the DPS | Either — at that point it is about which one you enjoy |
The 1.4.5 summoner rework
The update did not just add nine whips. It also reworked the summoner prefix system, which changed how summon-focused builds are put together. If you are planning a summoner character on 1.4.5.8, the new summons guide covers what changed and which prefixes are worth taking.
A note on the update's size
Version 1.4.5 — "Bigger & Boulder", released on 27 January 2026 — added more than 650 new items, taking the total past 6,000, and nine new whips aimed squarely at the summoner class. It was the first content update since 1.4.4 in 2022, and it remains the largest Terraria has had.
If you are unsure which build you are on, check the version in your main menu — PC is on 1.4.5.8 while console and mobile are on 1.4.5.8.1. The version differences page explains what actually changed between them.
The Kaleidoscope is a stardust whip added in version 1.4.5 — one of nine new whips in the update. It arrived alongside a reworked summoner prefix system, and it occupies a slot in the summoner class that was noticeably thin before.
