Terraria equipment slot calculator: what to wear in every slot

Terraria9 min readVerified on patch 1.4.5.8

Terraria accessories are a five-to-seven slot puzzle, and most players solve it badly in one of two directions: they wear whatever they found first, or they spend a week farming a list copied off a tier list that was written for a different stage of the game. This planner gives you the loadout for your class at your progress, slot by slot.

How to use it

 1. Pick your class. Melee, ranged, magic and summoner want different things, and summoners specifically want different modifiers.
 2. Pick your stage. Pre-Hardmode, Hardmode or post-Plantera — the answer changes completely between them.
 3. Read the slot list. It gives you each slot, what to put in it, and the modifier to target.
The modifier is half the answer. A Celestial Shell with a bad modifier is worse than a lesser accessory with the right one, because modifiers multiply across every slot you own.

The three rules the planner encodes

1. Movement before damage, always

In the early game, a movement accessory saves more lives than a damage accessory ever will. A player who can double jump does not take the fall damage; a player with 4% more damage still dies to the same hit.

StageFirst priority
Pre-HardmodeMovement — a second balloon, a double jump
HardmodeSurvival — the Ankh Shield, then the Celestial Shell
Post-PlanteraDamage — class pieces at the right modifier

2. One modifier, applied everywhere

ModifierGivesUse it when
Menacing+4% damageYou can already win comfortably
Warding+4 defenseYou are still learning the fight
Lucky+4% crit chanceRanged and crit builds
Quick+4% move speedRarely worth a slot
Arcane+20 manaCasters with mana problems

With seven slots, an all-Menacing set swings damage by about 28%. That is larger than most single upgrades you can farm.

Warning: Summoners should never take Lucky. Minions cannot land critical hits, so the modifier does literally nothing while taking a slot. This is the single most common summoner mistake.

3. Fill the defensive slot before the offensive one

The Ankh Shield blocks projectiles and grants knockback immunity plus immunity to twelve common debuffs. Against the Destroyer and Skeletron Prime, where chip damage is what kills you, it is the difference between surviving and not.

It is also the accessory people are most likely to skip, because they read it as a defensive item and assume damage is better. The accessory tier list has the stage-by-stage reasoning.

When your build is actually finished

You are done when you have:

Anything beyond that is a rounding error, and the grind past that point is the most common way new players burn a month for nothing.

Version note: this planner is written against 1.4.5.8 on PC. Console, mobile and Switch run 1.4.5.8.1. Slot counts and item availability are the same across builds — only hotfix timing differs — so see the version differences page if something is missing from your game.
How many accessory slots does a Terraria character have?
Five in Classic Mode. Expert Mode adds a sixth through a Demon Heart, and Master Mode starts with six and can reach seven with a Demon Heart on top. Vanity slots are separate and do not affect stats.
What is the best accessory for a melee Terraria build?
For melee, movement comes first — a Shiny Red Balloon and Hermes Boots early, then the Celestial Shell and an Ankh Shield in Hardmode, with Menacing modifiers once the fights are comfortable. That sequence is what the planner above builds for you.
What is the best accessory for a summoner Terraria build?
Summoners want the Shiny Red Balloon for a second balloon and an Ankh Shield for projectile survival, and they should avoid Lucky modifiers because minions cannot land critical hits.
Should all my Terraria accessories have the same modifier?
Usually yes. An all-Menacing set gives around 28% more damage across seven slots, and an all-Warding set gives the same in defence. Mixed sets are for specific problems, not for general use.
Does reforging matter more than the accessory itself in Terraria?
At endgame, often yes. The right modifier on the right accessory is worth more than a marginal upgrade to the accessory, because modifiers multiply across every slot.
